As we age our sleeping patterns change, and we tend to sleep less heavily but more frequently. Older people often nod off in their chair by the fire or while watching television yet do not sleep well during the night – our old cats are very similar. Someone in the Old Cat Survey commented of their oldie, “He has generally slowed down, rarely climbs trees and watches more T.V.” -this could be true for any one of us!
Warmth and Comfort
Normal body changes during old age mean that cats over the age of ten will begin to feel the cold more – they are less active and, because their coats may not be so thick or insulating, need to be kept warmer. Beds need to be situated out of drafts, preferably raised off the ground with high sides to protect from any cold breezes and to allow the cat to get cozy.

- Older cats tend to lose body weight as they age because they utilize their food less effectively. Therefore, most elderly cats need a diet that contains higher levels of easily digested energy than a younger one. Cats digest fat particularly well, so diets for elderly cats tend to contain higher levels of fat. Continue reading
